ABOUT THE ARTIST
Ulaayu Pilurtuut was born in Kangirsujuaq, Nunavik in 1964. She has been living in Kuujjuaq, the largest community on the Ungava Peninsula, for the past ten years. Her interest in art dates back to childhood, with her first drawings at the age of nine. Her works depict Inuit culture, lifestyle, and nature.
In her drawings, Pilurtuut typically uses black pigment ink with a touch of color to highlight the artwork. She also does acrylic, oil and glass painting, and stenciling. As an ambassador for her ancestral culture, she teaches Inuktut, the language of her people, and explores new ways of adaptation to the modern world through artistic expression.
Ulaayu Pilurtuut was selected by the Royal Canadian Mint to create two images for a series of Indigenous collector’s coins launched in 2013.
