As part of TRC Day and Peace Days, September 30, from 6 to 8 pm, we are organizing a panel discussion titled “Every Breath is Sacred: A Dialogue Among Spiritual Leaders”.

The discussion promotes interfaith understanding and reconciliation, emphasizing the Indigenous perspective. The panel will explore the sacredness of breath and life and the importance of spiritual leadership in addressing global challenges.

Kevin Deer, cultural leader kanien’kehà:ka/Mohawk, and faithkeeper at the Mohawk Trail Longhouse in Kahnawake, along with other spiritual leaders, including Rabbi Lisa Grushcow, Imam Hassan Guillet, and Presbyterian Pastor Richard Bonnetto.

How to join our team:

Sacred Fire Productions is a non-profit organization based in Tiohti:áke (Montreal) existing since 2012 that has received its charitable status in 2021. Our mission is to build bridges between Indigenous artists and audiences of all ages and backgrounds, including in urban areas, so that these artists can assert themselves, develop and live better from their art. We believe in the revitalization and reclaiming of Indigenous arts and cultural practices that are traditionally rooted in the communities. Through an approach that fosters intercultural exchange and dialogue, we wish to contribute to a better understanding of First Nations, Inuit and Métis cultures and to a positive attitude towards them.

We are currently looking for committed volunteers with experience to join our Board of Directors, who would be able to commit to 8-10 meetings per year, as well as other special events and assemblies, and who have the following skills and experiences:

• Understanding of Indigenous issues, consequences of residential schools, multigenerational trauma
• People who have worked on their own healing
• Non-profit experience / board experience / community experience
• Specific skill areas such as human resources, finance, project management, marketing, fundraising, facilitation, mediation
• Familiar with arts & culture scene in Quebec and elsewhere
• Committed to social justice, decolonization, and anti-oppression and familiar with intersectionality

NATIONAL INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY

More than ever, the visibility of the Indigenous cultures of Quebec and Canada to the general public is part of the reconciliation process. As the first proof of Canadian multiculturalism, Indigenous populations are the bearers of traditional artistic and cultural practices that are an integral part of their identities. The sharing of these artistic practices is at the heart of the mission of Sacred Fire Productions.

• Promote the visibility of Indigenous cultures and intercultural bridges

Montreal, September 14, 2020 – Sacred Fire Productions (SFP) appointed a new board of directors at its Annual General Meeting on August 25th.

The presidency will be shared between two Co-presidents: Ms. Gail Chamberlain (member of the Wahnapitae First Nation) and Mr. Kevin Deer (member of the Mohawk / Kanien’kehà:ka Nation). The Vice-President is Ms. Marlene Hale (member of Wet’suwet’en First Nation), the Treasurer is Ms. Marisa Barkhouse (member of the Namgis Nation), and the Secretary is Ms. Hélène Binette. These members, three of whom are new to the board and two of whom are Indigenous elders, will strengthen the organization’s mission and bring new energy to it.
“In the current context, I am particularly proud of the composition of the Board of Directors which, for the first time in its short history brings together two traditional elders. Their presence on the Board will ground the governance in traditional ways of being and knowing, strengthening the organization in the promotion of Indigenous artists and traditional and contemporary artisans”, says new Co-Chair, Gail Chamberlain.

For his part, Mr. Kevin Deer, Co-Chair, will ensure that SFP focuses on its mission and pursues its ideal of reconciliation among peoples: “In these difficult times, when climate change and a global pandemic are calling us to rethink and re-create our connection to the land, indigenous art and wisdom are rich in teachings that need to be known and shared. Let’s collectively take this vision to heart, beyond unnecessary debate. »
