ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in the community of Mashteuiatsh, she grew up on the banks of Piekukami, Lac-St-Jean. From childhood, the self-taught artist was fascinated by the art and traditions of the Piekuakamilnuatsh, the people of Lac St-Jean. As a painter and carving, her solo exhibition “Reprendre le portage” was featured at the Odanak Museum in 2017. As a Pow Wow dancer and energetic performer, she identifies as “Agokwe,” two-spirit and bisexual in action. The hybrid performance she created for “Désobéissez. Prises de Parole” in 2014 had a significant impact. Originally painting to express her rebellion and anger in the face of her people’s despair, she discovered the peaceful power of her canvases, which denounce the established order and assert the right to self-affirmation. Guided by her instincts, dreams, and ancestors, she explores the theme of duality and contrast in painting and performance.
Sarah Cleary is currently a member of the collective “Trickster Sisters” with Atikamekw artist Eruoma Awashish.
