ABOUT THE ARTIST
Born in 1968 in Chibougamau and raised by his adoptive parents, Harry and Laura, in Chapais, Jimmy Tim Whiskeychan is a self-taught Cree artist from Waskaganish.
Curious and open minded, always looking to learn new things, he roots his works into Cree traditions and culture while using contemporary art practices and techniques, which makes him an agile artist and an inspired and inspiring mentor. Tim Whiskeychan returned to school from 1996 to 1999 to improve his knowledge. He paints with acrylic, but enjoys discovering other mediums. He works as an illustrator as well as designer. Now, he is a master in figurative and abstract drawing techniques, watercolor painting and acrylic, wood sculpture and oil painting, and he can also use digital tools to create. In 2013, he was selected by the Royal Canadian Mint to participate in the creation of a collector’s coin. His piece was unveiled on September 14th, 2014. Tim Whiskeychan fluently speaks cree, english and french, which allows him to travel with his art and develop a large audience and market for his works.

This year, Jimmy Tim Whiskeychan devotes a whole exhibition of 15 paintings to Jean Paul Riopelle (1923-2002), emblematic figure of modern Canadian art, Quebecois and international, inspired by nordics landscapes and Indigenous cultures.
